Generic Codes and Conventions

What are generic codes and conventions?
Generic Codes - Generic conventions are the features shown by texts that allow them to be put into a specific genre forexample almost all wersterns use the iconography of cowboy hats, six shooters and horses (RDR). Generic conventions also determine what category the text is i.e. print or non print and because of this people can either hear the genre or read it.

Generic Codes - Generic codes are certain symbols that relate to a specific genre and often appear in distinctive media i.e. Rap music videos usually have the rappers wearing "bling" jewellry. It is symbollic.

What is genre?
Genre is to catagorise artistic composition, as in music or literature, marked by a distinctive style, form, or content.

Why is genre so important?
Genre is important because it defines a certain style of music. It creates the way we approach and respond to a text. Being able to categorise something by its general kind or type is helpful because when we come across something new, certain features of it allow us to compare it immediately with similar things we already know.

What are the drawbacks of genre?
Genre can be very limited in that it focuses of the generics and doesn't open up. It becomes something we can expect to see or hear. It produces forms of cliche or formulaic styles.

What are hybrid and sub music genres?
Subgenre - A subcategory within a particular genre
Hybrid Genre - A combination of two or more then types of music.
